Desert islands

I was asked a question like this in an interview once: “If you were stranded on a desert island, name one book, CD, and movie you’d like to have.” I said the Bible, Radiohead’s Kid A, and The Shawshank Redemption. Those are honest answers, though filtered through the nervousness of one of my first real job interviews.

I digress. I wanted to comment on this. The question is what would you “most like to have if [you] were stranded on a desert island?”

Some blogs have credited Tom Tancredo with the best answer (boat), but I have to disagree. If you had a boat, you wouldn’t be stranded on a desert island. You’d be a dumbass sitting on an island for no apparent reason, as you could have left on the boat ages ago. Or you already failed to escape on the boat, in which case a boat was a terrible answer.

Also, why the fuck would you say “tarp” (Sam Brownback)?

It is also funny how the top tier candidates all said book; Clinton, Obama, Edwards & Guliani, McCain. There isn’t possibly a more benign answer; it shows how well they have been trained to not rock the boat. Plus, Tancredo’s answer would depend on his tone, it could either be mindlessly dumb or sarcastic, in which case I would like it; because it is a dumb question.

Yeah, and they didn’t even say what book. I still can’t get over “tarp,” though. Dodd’s answer of coffee is pretty dumb, too.

It is a desert island? No one said “Fresh Water” or even food? Dodd said coffee, but it is a ‘desert’ island.
