This is completely inappropriate!

This is kind of amusing. Mean, but amusing.

I’m well aware that I am incapable of understanding how people believe in any religion, but there are a few that I am utterly at a loss to even get close to understanding. The first one is Scientology. I mean, seriously. The souls of dead aliens killed by h-bombs around a volcano? I don’t understand how these people keep from wandering into oncoming traffic.

Religion number two is Mormonism. A guy is visited by an angel named Moroni (which I assume is not Italian for moron) and is given golden plates supposedly written in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics? Really? Why not just English? Why not let him freely show them to everyone? I’ve missed something. They also have the distinction of an especially vile form of fundamentalism.

Of course, my main mistake is to believe they’re justified on the basis of the plausibility of their origins, rather than their morals and theology. Then again, I don’t understand a sort of “hey, turning the other cheek is a pretty good idea” -> “some guy rose from the dead so all you have to do is believe in him and you’re going to paradise!” leap either.

The rotten.com library entry on Joseph Smith is absolutely fantastic for showing just how crazy Mormons are:

They’re equally good for Scientology and L. Ron, now that I come to think of it. God I love Rotten.

Jung said something abut religious schizphrenia – it’s a form of mental illness for some, just a hangover from childhood indoctrination for most. A good book on Mormons – Under the Banner of Heaven, by Krakauer. A page turner.

Yup, I read Krakauer’s book earlier this year. Fascinating.
