The road to hell

I broke down and ordered an iPod (a 60 GB video) the other day and it came this morning. My attempts to find an alternative player have finally ended. I’ve been sucked in. I still don’t like iTunes, but it’s WAY better than the absolutely horrible software my Zen Touch has.

Rockboxing it seems like a project for this weekend. So is trying out the iPod plugin for foobar2000.

So, anyone want to buy a 20 GB Creative Zen Touch? Works fine, just has terrible Windows software (good Linux software, though). $90 or so, I’m thinking.

UPDATE: Experience so far: meh. The first thing I did when I got it was install iTunes 7 and update to the 1.2 firmware. I discovered that 1.2 could be better: random freezing during podcasts (not that I listen to them that often – or ever) and the two free TV shows I downloaded from the iTunes store are very choppy (again, not that I want to watch TV shows on my iPod). iTunes 7 has issues with my music collection: about half the tracks end in the null terminator character in the library. Loading them onto the device leads to multiple entries of the same song (leading to multiple entries of the same artist and album). Luckily, the foo_dop plugin for foobar2000 works flawlessly. I installed Rockbox along the way, but removed it in an attempt to see if it had anything to do with the freezes while playing podcasts. After that I decide to downgrade to firmware 1.1.2. Not surprisingly, neither of the shows I downloaded work with that firmware, but podcasts seem to be work well enough. Now it’s time to try Rockbox again. Installs fine, seems to be working. I find a theme I like and change a few settings. Turn on Tagcache and try listening to some of my music. Crash: data abort at some memory address. This happens several times on the three latest builds. I can’t listen to a whole song without it crashing. I could have sworn it was working better last time.

So here’s the conundrum: go back to 1.2 in the hope that Rockbox is stable and lose the ability to listen to podcasts (and possibly long songs) or stick with this and live with the iPod 1.1.2 firmware, which doesn’t seem to have any problems (other than the lack of gapless playback)?

An iPod? I am so ashamed of you. At least you’re down with R0xx0rzb0xen. Or whatever.

I may not be down for that long. The latest two three builds crash constantly. I haven’t made it through a whole song yet.

Hunh. I’ve had basically zero problems on my iRiver h320. Maybe the bits for your (new generation?) player are still pretty experimental.

I fell into the same trap. Ditched my 1 year old Creative Zen Xtra for an iPod (80gb). Did you get rockbox on there? I’ve been waiting for a rockbox firmware for the 80gb version but apparently they can’t get it to work. Also, the foobar plugin, does it work well? iTunes is a pain and I use foobar mainly anyways.

I gave up on Rockbox. The foobar plugin works pretty well. I used it a couple times to copy my entire music collection to my iPod all at once, which seems like a pretty good test. I haven’t had any problems with it.
