Joy

Finally, no more laptop for me. I got my new computer built and set up over the past couple days. So nice. In addition to being able to play F.E.A.R. and HL 2, I’ve discovered the awesomeness of DVD-A.

I had a few hiccups in getting it up and running. My laptop came with an XP disc that I could use for installs from scratch. I’d used it on a couple other computers, too, without any problems. So, I thought, I can skip buying a new SP2 version. Or not. Turns out half my hardware (the USB bus with my USB mouse being the most egregious) wasn’t being picked up and it didn’t recognize all of my 320 GB HD (which I was expecting, at least). Also, while it did validate using the CD key I had, some glitch in Windows Update made it think it wasn’t validated. Lovely. So, I had to go grab an overpriced retail version at Staples. Pretty easy after that, except my Audigy 2 ZS card seems a little flaky and wouldn’t output to one of my speakers correctly. Finally, after unplugging and plugging back in the card inputs, it began to work properly.

All in all, pretty simple. My apartment has several ethernet jacks, so I transfered files from my laptop to my new PC quite easily. I’d post a picture, but all I have is a cell phone camera.

If you’re interested, the specs are below.

Thermaltake Tsunami Dream case (with a window, so I can stare at my horrible wiring job)
Antec TruePower 2 550W
Asus A8N32-SLI Premium (will I grab another card for SLI? Probably not, but you never know)
AMD 64 X2 4200+ (mmm, dual core; too bad I was too impatient to wait for the AM2 versions)
2 GB Corsair ValueSelect RAM
eVGA GeForce 7900 GT CO
WD 320 GB SATA HD
Audigy 2 ZS sound card
Sony DVD-ROM
Lite-On 16x DVD burner
Logitech Z-5300e speakers
Samsung 740n 17″ LCD monitor (not the greatest in the world, but it works)
