Strange people

I have to say, I’m fascinated by the sheer insanity of Tool fans. Toolnavy (you have to register to see the 10,000 Days forum) has a large contingent of fans who believe the leaked album is a hoax. Not a hoax as in it’s not Tool, but a hoax perpetrated by the band. Like, they made a fake album to throw people off. The only remotely plausible (and that’s awfully generous) idea is that it’s a collection of b-sides. In any case, they have a bunch of fairly weak reasons in favor of this, ranging from the odd lyrics (they’re always deep and thoughtful!) to the fact that the source of the leak is unknown (I think there’s another rip now, so that may be out the window).

Still, funny stuff. While I’m not amazed by this album and I’d love to have more music from them, I can’t help but think of the consequences of such a hoax. We’d have a mass of Tool fans proclaiming Tool to be gods for such a huge hoax. I don’t think I can handle that. Plus, if we do have the real thing (which, we do, as far as I’m concerned), we get to see a ton of Tool fans fall into despair over Tool having produced something that’s less than great. And then the inevitable flip by the fanboys, to the point where five years from now we’ll have a new leak and new hoax theories, because the new one just can’t hold a candle to 10,000 Days.

If such a thing came to pass, I don’t know if I would be relieved or disappointed. 10,000 Days is weaker than Lateralus, I think, but not weak enough to be a joke. I think all we’re seeing is a lot of mainstream influence from APC’s rise in popularity, and perhaps an album that wasn’t ready to be made.
