Various pointless comments

So I figured out what those Christian posters I’ve been mentioning are all about. Apparently, several Christian groups are apologizing for “misrepresenting” Christ through their actions and historical acts done by Christians. They have t-shirts that say “I’m sorry” on them. Seems like an exercise in excess self-flagellation to me. It seems like a pretty fundamental point of Christianity that everyone’s a sinner, even Christians. Of course, maybe if some of them would knock of the self-righteous moralizing there wouldn’t be whatever misunderstanding there is. Maybe they were apologizing for that, too. Anyway, they have a big white wooden elephant cutout where you can write questions or comments you have about Christianity. I wrote part of Epicurus’s riddle:

If He is willing to prevent evil, but not able, he is impotent. If He is able, but not willing, he is malevolent. If He is able and willing, whence evil?

That’s approximately the bastardized version I scribbled on there. One of them told me it was a good question and he didn’t have the answer. No shit. I wonder about Christians who can’t at least babble something about free will. I fully expect that when I walk by it tomorrow someone will have scribbled that next to it. I’m going to be very disappointed if it hasn’t been. Someone also pointed out something that I’ve wondered about. Why the hell would you call a group Campus Crusade for Christ? Seems like you would want to avoid that word, especially considering it represents one of the things they’re apologizing for.

In other news, Margot Kidder spoke at our College Democrats meeting tonight. That was interesting. I also went to the Morris Dees lecture, which was excellent.

I know it’s easy to distrust the “believers,” but could it be a group of Christians apologizing for the fundamentalist extremism in our country? Heck, if Christians actually followed what Christ said they’d be a pretty bang-up group!

It’s possible they were apologizing for that, but I think Campus Crusade for Christ (the main group) is fairly conservative. I’m not sure, though.
