Entertaining and hopefully informative

Several days ago a peculiar event happened here. One of my brother’s CDs exploded inside the CD drive in our computer. You can witness the carnage here and here.

Now, what would cause such a thing to happen? My only guess is a poorly fabricated CD. The CD drive is a couple years old, but hasn’t had any problems.

The Mythbusters did a show on this. It’s not very likely to happen, but if it’s a fast CD-ROM, and the disc is old or weak, blammo.

The exact same thing happened to me. I managed to wrangle a free CD-RW and a free copy of Battlefield 1942 (the disc that was in the drive) out of it, too.

Mine went into lots and lots and lots of tiny pieces, though, and took the drive with it – it would only open using the ol’ paperclip-in-the-hole reset thing.

Ours may still work; I cleaned some pieces out of it but haven’t put it in our other computer yet. Right after it happened it still sort of worked, but after a while it wouldn’t close. You’d hit the button and it close for a couple seconds, then pop back open.
