Good riddance

I commented on Larry Darby and the Atheist Law Center a while back, when they brought David Irving to speak at one of their events. Darby has now resigned:

The founder of the Montgomery-based Atheist Law Center has resigned following a scathing report criticizing him for playing host to Holocaust denier David Irving.

Larry Darby, former president of the nonprofit Atheist Law Center, fired back at the report Wednesday and defended his association with Irving. He added that the report had nothing to do with his stepping down from his post.

Darby’s resignation was effective Nov. 4.

“I resigned from the Atheist Law Center because I want to run for public office,” said Darby, who founded the center Sept. 11, 2002. “Had I not resigned, I would be viewed as a single-issue candidate.”

Darby said Wednesday that he intends to seek the Democratic nomination for state attorney general in the June 6 primary.

There’s not a chance in hell he’ll get nominated, so maybe we don’t have to hear anything about him anymore. Darby has a suspiciously familiar defense of his holocaust beliefs:

Darby said he does not deny the Holocaust occurred but he does disagree with the figure of 6 million Jews.

“Using the phrase ‘The Holocaust’ is inaccurate because it only refers to one set of people,” he said. “There have been many holocausts throughout history but Zionists try to focus solely on the Jews. It was an unfortunate situation. A lot of innocent people were killed. A lot of innocent Russians were killed. Jews were not the sole victims of World War II.”

Granted, it’s hard to judge from the article, but that’s not a defense of his revisionism with regard to the 6 million figure, if it was supposed to be. There’s also nothing about that statement that would warrant having a Holocaust denier like Irving to speak at your event. Think the Holocaust was just one of many, say so, but what purpose does downplaying it serve in making that point? Darby seems to either be an complete idiot or something of an anti-Semite. With his odd comments about a Jewish mafia, the latter is certainly plausible.

IIRC, something like 20-22 million Russians perished in the second World War.

So, I could see someone come along and point that out and say something to the effect of — “in sheer numbers, the Russians and the Chinese suffered a much worse Holocaust then what happened to the Jewish.” And that would be at least a more fair statement than trying to deny that 6 million Jews died at the hands of the Nazis.

Everyone can have their remembrance. I always wonder why so many would deny the Jewish people the remembrance that is rightfully theirs. And for someone to do that and point to the Russians as somehow “more wronged” is absolutely perplexing.

Also remember, however, that no group in history has been as reviled or as hated or as persecuted as Jews.

Their refusal to assimilate in the slightest might have something to with it, but still.
