PDB released

It’s out. As was predicted, not a bombshell, but not helpful to the Bush administration. Key paragraphs:

Nevertheless, FBI information since that time indicates patterns of suspicious activity in this country consistent with preparations for hijackings or other types of attacks, including recent surveillance of federal buildings in New York.

The FBI is conducting approximately 70 full field investigations throughout the US that it considers Bin Ladin-related. CIA and the FBI are investigating a call to our Embassy in UAE in May saying that a group of Bin Ladin supporters was in the US planning attacks with explosives.

What happened when we had similar reports in 1999? We went on alert. What happened this time? Silence.

    Go on alert for what?

No names other than OBL’s appear in the Bush briefing.

The memo has no warning that hijackers would use airplanes as kamikaze missiles. Nor does the memo make any mention of hijackers overtaking U.S. flight crews with small knives.

The breifing mentions “federal buildings in New York.” But the World Trade Center is not a federal building.

    No time frame was given.

So, we should havegone on permanant alert for OBL to land at JFK and bring a bomb in a large suitcase then?

The title “Bin Laden Determined to Attack US”

Sounds to me like they should have titled it “The Sky is Blue” or maybe “Water is Wet”.

Or, equally, “analog kid” is brainless.

I didn’t mean the PDB was a smoking gun. I’m under the impression, as Clarke and Tenet have both said, they had a spike in reports like those in the time leading up to 9/11, and the some of the information in that PDB is part of it.

Nor does the memo make any mention of hijackers overtaking U.S. flight crews with small knives.

FBI information since that time indicates patterns of suspicious activity in this country consistent with preparations for hijackings or other types of attacks

Surely you can’t think the fact that they used small knives is THAT critical.

I realize that you knew that, I was just wondering if, in the +/- 35 days between the PDB and September 11th, you thought that Bush and the TSA could have pumped up airport security enough to catch even 1/3 of the hijackers.

Especially since nearly all previous hi-jackings had been committed with either firearms or explosives that were brought onto the aircraft.
