Ugh

April 30, 2007 Leave a comment

Man, this “weekend” sucked.

Also, Geddy Lee’s voice is no longer causing me to want to gouge out my eyes with a rusty spoon. I haven’t decided if that’s a good or bad thing yet.

Hey you

April 4, 2007 9 comments

Alright, geeky people who read this blog. I think I should read a fiction book at least once this year. I have also, throughout my life, completely avoided reading any Science Fiction. Well, I suppose I don’t really know enough about the genre to say that. I assume something like Fahrenheit 451 is close to Science Fiction, right?

This is a monumental task, I know. Suggest a Sci-Fi book I should read. One! My opinion of the entire genre will rest on the book I choose.

Also, if no one responds to this post, I’m going to look silly (it’s like talking to yourself, only the whole world can see you), so bear that in mind and come up with something.

UPDATE: Thanks for the recommendations. I’ll probably be reading The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.

Downsides to 26-in-52

Man, I really want to read Tony Judt’s Postwar, but it’s 800 frickin’ pages. That’ll take me a month at a solid pace and completely wreck my attempt to read 26 books this year.

I suppose I can’t complain when that’s my most prominent personal problem at the moment.

Never underestimate…

the effect of a few percentage points raise distributed in one lump sum.

Also, it’s funny how partisanship gives the moral compass a spin, isn’t it?

Jebus

It’s been like, five days since I posted something. Even more if you’re only counting significant posts. This whole 55-60 hours a week at work thing isn’t the greatest.

In case you have a void this blog normally fills: conservatives suck. Religion sucks. Religious conservatives really suck.

Huzzah!

I'm excited

February 4, 2007 Leave a comment

This week is going to be fun. Not only is the project I’m on at work going to be largely complete, two days this week will consist of me doing nothing but learning Python from this guy. I don’t get to attend the third day of training, but it’ll still be fun.

In other news, Beryl is entertaining. Useful? No. Entertaining? Yes. Bending down the corner of a window to see behind it is endlessly amusing to me.

Also, which part of “free speech” does the EU not understand?

This is distressing

Random fact 1:

Whatever part of the brain we use to gage a person’s age based on outward appearance is completely broken for me. Anyone from my age to mid-30s is in a broad “older than me” category. Beats me.

Random fact 2:

Norway has declared iTunes illegal. That seems silly.

Random fact 3:

This is, as Wulfgar would say, deeply stupid.

Things I'm better off not knowing

1. Guitar Hero 2 is coming to the 360 in March. I was already thinking about getting a 360 this spring. If I do, it’ll be hard to avoid getting that. The hours I’ll waste on that game will be embarrassing.

New theme

Thought I needed a change. This one seems more “open,” so to speak. It also has very unoriginal graphics and isn’t really modified much from K2 (or 3K2, to be precise – I was originally going to go three column). I like it, though. Let me know if you see any problems, think it’s bad, slow, etc.

In other news, it’s December 17th. What the hell? I remember when this month used to just crawl by.

UPDATE: Just noticed that the Now Reading library page is screwy. I’ll fix it later.

Holidays and such

November 21, 2006 Leave a comment

So, it appears Thanksgiving is this week. Not one of my favorite holidays, really. You know what? There aren’t really that many holidays I actually look forward to, outside of looking forward to a day off. Easter? Candy and rabbits aren’t enough for me to stomach the most religious of our holidays. Fourth of July? Fireworks are cool, but nothing to write home about. Halloween? I may actually actively dislike that holiday, and not for any particular reason. New Year’s? Huzzah, the year incremented! The other minor holidays don’t have the festivities to make them worth more than the vacation time (though plenty are holidays for a good reason).

Back to Thanksgiving. I wish there were some decent Thanksgiving movies. As it stands, the only one I can think of is Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, which is good. Anything else? I suspect not.

This also happens to be the first Thanksgiving on my own and, fittingly, the first one I won’t be spending with family. Which isn’t really a huge deal, but it is different.

The one thing I do like about Thanksgiving can be guessed from the list of holidays above, specifically, the one that’s missing. It means the beginning of the Christmas season. That’s a holiday. Fascinating history, a nice humanist message, presents…what could be better? Alright, so not having roaming bands of morons making up culture war skirmishes would be better, but nothing is perfect.

In any case, Happy Thanksgiving.
