NOM NOM NOM

Oh noes, the gays are coming.

I believe that statement works whichever way you want to take the last word.

It’s only a matter of time before they enslave us all. The NOM website is great. Their FAQ especially:

1. Are you a bigot? “Why do you want to take away people’s rights?”
“Isn’t it wrong to write discrimination into the constitution?”

A: “Do you really believe people like me who believe mothers and fathers both matter to kids are like bigots and racists? I think that’s pretty offensive, don’t you? Particularly to the 60 percent of African-Americans who oppose same-sex marriage. Marriage as the union of husband and wife isn’t new; it’s not taking away anyone’s rights. It’s common sense.”

I like the irrelevant mention of African-American opposition to gay marriage. Disagreeing with African-Americans is clearly racist, so don’t you call me a bigot! They’ve even come up with a new argument for slavery: it’s not new, so whose rights are they taking away? They never had them! It’s wrong now, but at the time it was a-ok.

The beauty of that inclusion of “60% of African-Americans” is that it manages to even incorporate TWO logical fallacies into the argument.

I don’t believe in legalizing same sex marriage because I don’t believe in legal marriage at all. Marriage is a religious institution. Let the church figure out who they want to marry. If your church wants to marry you to God, to your dog, to your house, your money, or your boat.. go for it. The government needs to get out of the marriage business entirely. Everyone gets a civil union.. if you’re over 18 or an emancipated minor or by some means a legal adult.. you can have a civil union with any other legal adult. I don’t care if that adult is green and likes to have sex with furniture. You can have a civil union with that other adult. If you can then find a church that will marry you, your partner, and your sofa.. as part of some three-way furniture fucking sex cult.. go for it. That is between you and the church.

Ideally, that would be the way to go. But you’re really just quibbling over a name. What the government considers a marriage isn’t inherently different from any sort of “civil union” you define.

So yes, if I were creating a government, I would avoid the religious baggage of the word “marriage.” But since changing marriage to “civil union” or any other name is never going to happen and would probably be more controversial than gay marriage, it’s not a useful position to hold. It’s like saying you don’t believe in Thursday because you don’t worship Thor.
