Montana embarrassments

There’s a poll going on over at the Big Sky Blog, where you can vote for the most embarrassing Montana…moments, I guess? It has all the crazy people (the Freemen militia people and the Unabomber), the environmental disasters (asbestos in Libby and the Berkeley Pit) and various other disasters (Ryan Leaf).

While people like Kaczynski and the Freemen are probably the most actually embarrassing, there impact was smaller than other events. So I went with W.R. Grace and the asbestos contamination of Libby (twenty miles from where I went to high school). Hundreds are dead because of it and more will succumb to asbestos related diseases in the future.

Heard about Libby for the first time on NPR last week. A damn shame, that.

It’s not that people don’t care. That way oversimplifies it. The people who ran the asbestos mines in Libby were performing an institutional duty, and stepped outside their ordinary roles as human beings to do so. Once they saw all that they had done, they naturally backed away, and made sure that no one in their charge took any responsibility, because the stakes were too high. So it was a giant fuck-up followed by a cover up. Who among us would behave differently? If my income and pension depended on covering up an inadvertent crime, what would I do? What would I do … I dare anyone to say that they would rise above the norm and become the next Kimberly Wells.
