Free = good
For some reason, I never really looked at Heliologue’s free software list. Well, I now have, and I just installed a ton of the programs on it. Not all of these were installed just now, but here’s a list of what I have from it:
- Gaim – I liked this on Linux, but didn’t think to look for a Windows version. I hated Trillian and this seems very useful
- LeechGet –
If only it integrated into Firefox. I can’t figure out how to make it do that. No Download With plugin for 1.0PR.Hooray for FlashGot. - Firefox – Um, duh? How can you not use this?
- Thunderbird – Excellent, very clean and simple.
- 7zip – Finally, I can stop using WinRar. I hate that program.
- CDBurnerXP Pro – Haven’t used this yet, so I’ll reserve judgement. I want it to replace Easy CD Creator, but I may still need DirectCD.
- AVG – I love this one. I’m going to make my family switch to it eventually.
- Ad-Aware – Standard spyware removal. Must have.
- Spybot – Also a must have for spyware removal
- SpywareBlaster – Very nice. Of course, I can’t really tell how useful it is.
- OpenOffice – I kinda switched to this out of necessity, since I don’t have MS Office now, but it’s really cool and I’ll definitely stick with it. Sxw files are so much smaller than doc files, too.
- WordPress – The best blogging software I’ve used (Greymatter, MovableType, and Blogger).
- The Gimp – We’ll see. I’m not impressed with its layout, but I’ll give it a chance.
- K-Lite Codec Pack – Excellent. Comes with Media Player Classic, which is also excellent. Especially after my adventures with WMP 10.
- Real Alternative – I haven’t used it yet, but if it works, hallelujah!
Thank God* for free software!
*There is no* god.
*Probably not*
*I think

Oops. I should probably add my hacked version fo DownloadWith that works with 1.0PR. That’s how I integrate Leechget with Firefox.
I don’t use some of the programs on the list, like The Gimp, so I can’t say they’re all better than their costly contemporaries, but they should all be usable in any case.
On a side note, you don’t like Trillian? Or WinRAR? Eek.
Trillian was always lacking some of the features of both AIM and MSN. Plus I didn’t like the look (changeable, but, meh). I had more problems connecting than with the regular programs too. WinRAR has an interface I don’t like and would annoy me by popping up reminders that I was outside the trial period or whatever (actually, I might be thinking of something else here).
Real Alternative is the greatest solution to box of spyware. . . I mean realplayer ever invented. I don’t know how I lived without it.
