Campus invasion
From The Gadflyer, via Pandagon, an article on the Right and the ideological war on college campuses.
Montana State is not really a liberal college. Its main areas are engineering and agriculture, not social science, where progressive thought is more likely to be found. U of M is considered the liberal Montana campus, though I haven’t been there enough to vouch for that. So around here, I haven’t seen a whole lot of activism from the Right and actually not much from the Left either. Our College Democrats group is rather unorganized; we pretty much didn’t do anything the second semester when I started going to meetings. There is a College Republicans group, new last year, I believe. Ironically, they are supervised by a very left-wing professor (or so I’m told). I’ve not seen them out doing anything at all. In terms of activism, the litany of Christian groups are the only ones I’ve noticed, and their activities have been pretty staid: white flags with the “freedom” written in red on them out in the middle of campus and an anti-evolution speaker named Mace Baker brought to speak (I discussed this some here).
College Democrats is basically it for progressive groups on campus. Conservatives have College Republicans and the Christian groups, to a certain extent. Will we see any thing around here in the coming years? Probably not (though the election could generate something), but part of me wants to see something, anything, interesting happen around here.
Also, although I said “here” when referring to MSU, I’m not actually there, not for another week.
Though officially, I suppose my university is right-leaning (Fransiscan college), there’s no particular slant in the student body that I’ve seen. We’re small, so we don’t even have those types of groups. I don’t mind: I wouldn’t waste my time with them anyway.
Come on now, Jeff, how can you forget that guy who rode his bike in circles around the SUB screaming “NO BLOOD FOR OIL!”

Heh, really? I missed that, then.
Jeff, if you’re not already involved, I encourage you to hook up with the Montana College Democrats.
Part of how the right wing kicks our ass is they organize better. The antidote is to get involved.
