Are they screwed?
So Bush’s poll numbers are dropping steadily, his lies about Iraq are coming to the surface, the mainstream media is downplaying them less than during the build up to war, decifits are exploding, Iraq is in chaos, is Bush going to be re-elected? I think it’s safe to say that if current events keep on the same path, and the Democrat’s mount a decent campaign the odds are decent that he won’t be. I think this is a safe assumption. So it’s not likely that Rove and company will allow the public to stay focused on our quagmire in Iraq or social/economic issues. But can they really do anything? Take a look here:
WASHINGTON – In a new dispute over interpreting intelligence data, the CIA and other agencies objected vigorously to a Bush administration assessment of the threat of Syria’s weapons of mass destruction that was to be presented Tuesday on Capitol Hill.
After the objections, the planned testimony by Undersecretary of State John R. Bolton, a leading administration hawk, was delayed until September.
Even if this turns out to be somehow not accurate, it brings up a interesting question. They can’t really use a new war to distract us from the current issues, can they? The CIA is not going to allow ANY kind of exaggeration of the threat of another country, seeing as they are catching the heat the Bush administration is deflecting. They won’t let it happen. And with a newly skeptical public (that may be a bit optimistic), it’ll be hard, especially with less distorted evidence, to convince them to support a war again, in all likelyhood dropping his popularity even more. Rove has to hope he can put the right spin on Iraq out there so that the press drops the issue. Can he do it? That seems to be the key to Bush’s re-election chances.
